Meanings of HP Words

Isn't this page great? Haven't you always wanted to know this stuff? You know you have, don't lie to me!!! Tee hee...Anyways, the best part about this page is that it involved very little work for me;) All these translations were made by Clarissa who generously sent them all to us. YAY!!!! So, without further ado, here they are:

Agrippa: Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa (1486-1535) wrote 3 philosophical books about magic. Wizard on a Chocolate Frog card.

Albus: white, pale, fair, hoary, gray; bright, clear; favorable, auspicious, fortunate

Amos (Diggory): love, affection; the beloved; Cupid; affair

Dedalus (Diggle): skillful, dexterous; skillfully made; artificial, artificially contrived; dappled This wizard magically made shooting stars in Kent to celebrate Voldemort's downfall.

Draco: dragon, snake

Dumbledore: Old English word for bumblebee

Lucius: Roman praenomen (first name).

Malfoy: The "Mal" sounds like "malevolent" or "malicious"

Minerva: Roman goddess of wisdom

Rubeus: of or produced from a bramble This would explain Rubeus Hagrid's wildly tangled hair and beard.

Severus: stern, strict, severe; grave, austere; weighty, serious; unadorned, plain

Snape: In English = to cut off, to strike

Sirius: ADJ. = of the dog-star NOUN = greater dog-star Remember what animal Sirius changes into?

Viktor: In German = Victoria. In Norwegian = Big. In Serbian = Viktor. In Slovenian = Victoria. In Swedish = Weight.

Volkov: In German = People. In Slovenian = Wolf man. In Turkish = Volcano. A Bulgarian Quidditch player at the Quidditch World Cup

Wormtail: In English = worm probably means "disgusting coward/traitor," or something like that. In English = tail probably means that he follows or "tails" whoever is the most powerful around. He used to be a friend of James Potter, but then he helped bring about James' death when he joined Voldemort.

Beasts:

Acromantula: Acro = very rare. The "antula" probably comes from tarantula. Huge black-haired 8-eyed spider that can talk. Its legs can reach up to 15 feet. "Rumors that a colony of Acromantula has been established in Scotland are unconfirmed." ~~~ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Erumpent: Erumpet = break out, burst; erupt "The Erumpent will not attack unless severely provoked, but should it charge, the results are usually catastrophic. The Erumpent's horn can pierce everything from skin to metal, and contains a deadly fluid which will cause whatever is injected with it to explode."

Kappa: Cappa = Medieval lesser; cape, cloak, cassock, cope "Often said to look like a monkey with fish scales instead of fur, it has a hollow in the top of its head in which it carries water. The Kappa feeds on human blood..."

Obscurus Books - 18a Diagon Alley, London: Obscurus = dark, secret; vague, obscure Wizarding publishing company.

Hogsmeade: meade = go along, pass, travel The only all-magic village in Britain. People like hags and goblins hide there so Muggles can't see them.

(Little) Hangleton: Hangle = Englishman; Angles (colonizers of Britain) City where the Riddle House is located.

Spells:

Accio: to send for, summon forth, fetch; to invite Spell to summon objects. Harry uses it to summon his broom from the castle so he can beat the dragon.

Alohomora: Hermione uses this spell to unlock doors.

Aparecium: A = away/off. Pare = be visible. Cium = liquid unit equal to 3 qt. Hermione tries this spell to see if Riddle's diary is in invisible ink. If it was, then the writing would be seen.

Avada Kedavra: A = away/off. Vada = stream/ford. Ked = withdraw/ retire/ leave. Avra = breeze, breath (of air), wind. UNFORGIVABLE CURSE. Voldemort used this curse to kill Harry's parents and many others.

Crucio: torment, torture UNFORGIVABLE CURSE. Voldemort and his Death Eaters use it to torture people including Harry.

Deletrius: Delet = wipe out, erase, delete. After Amos Diggory uses Priori Incantatem, he makes the smoky ghost of the spell disappear.

Densaugeo: Dens = tooth. Augeo = increase, enlarge Malfoy tries to curse Harry but he misses and gets Hermione. Her front teeth start growing abnormally.

Diffindo: split, divide Harry used it to tear Cedric's bookbag.

Dissendium: Dis = god; rich. Dium = daylit, divine This is the secret spell used to open a statue's hump. The hole leads to Honeydukes in Hogsmeade.

Ennervate: weaken, enervate; deprive of vigor Used to revive Stunned people. Its English meaning is exactly the opposite of the spell's meaning.

Engorgio: En = behold! see! here! hey! look at this! Crouch (disguised as Mad-Eye) uses this spell to make a spider bigger during his lesson.

Expecto Patronum: Expecto = anticipate, hope for. Patronum = protector Advanced spell used to ward off dementors. The patronus takes the form suiting the castor. Harry's is a stag, Prongs.

Expelliarmus: Expelli = drive out, expel, banish. Armus = arm, shoulder This spell disarms a wizard of their wand. Harry also disarmed Malfoy of the diary with this spell.

Ferula: stick, rod

Fidelius Charm: Fidelius = true, trustworthy, dependable, reliable A secret cannot be revealed or found unless the one person it is cast on, the Secret-Keeper, tells it. Sirius Black was the Potters' Secret-Keeper, but he was afraid that Voldemort might suspect him and torture the information of Lily and James and Harry's whereabouts. So he made Peter Pettigrew the Secret-Keeper and Peter was in league with Voldemort and he told Voldemort and Voldemort killed Lily and James.

Oculus Reparo: Eye(glasses) Repair. Hermione used this spell in the movie to repair Harry's broken glasses. They were broken because of Dudley's punches.

Priori Incantatem: Earlier Enchant(ment) This spell was used to see earlier spells performed by the wand. Amos Diggory pointed his wand tip to another, said the latin, and the smoky ghost of a spell (Morsmordre), the ghost of the Dark Mark, formed.

Reparo: renew, repair Hermione repairs some glass after Ron breaks it.

Other:

Auror: VERB = gild, overlay with gold An Auror is a Dark wizard catcher.

Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus: LITERAL MEANING: Dragon (or snake), sleep (or be at rest), never, provoke (or tickle) SUGGESTED (GUESSED) MEANING: Never poke a sleeping dragon. This is the Hogwarts motto.

Beauxbatons: BeautifulBatons Beaux (in French) = beautiful. Bâtons (in French) = batons; or wands The coat of arms for the school of Beauxbatons is two crossed golden wands each emitting 3 stars.
